This summer’s grand adventure: flying to Washington, cruising to Alaska, boarding a helicopter in Juneau, and landing on Herbert Glacier.
Shout out to Coastal Helicopters who have an ADA lift🦽, a knowledgeable and engaging team, and the expertise and fun to give us a bucket-list experience we will never forget.
Standing on the expanse of the Juneau Icefield and seeing nothing but rivers of ice all the way to the horizon gave me a fresh glimpse of God’s creative power. “By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast” (Job 37:10). Mark and I agree that unbounded nature makes us feel small and insignificant, and we love it. To witness raw power, to be caught up in something bigger than ourselves, is utterly terrifying and ruinous if not for love. Without the knowledge that God is love, I think the icefields would have frightened rather than fascinated me. At places like this where I can see God’s power and love intersect, awe replaces fear and purpose pervades the unknown.
There’s nothing quite like treading on thick ice to crack open narrow-mindedness and breathe in a bigger worldview. There is more to our reality than we can take in all at once—and its Author is love, working things together for good. To borrow E. E. Cummings’ line, “I thank You God for most this amazing day.”
Thanks also to Coastal Helicopters, Tarek the pilot, and Mark.
